Symposium – Cryoablation and PFA: Competing or Complementary in AF Management
This session is supported by Medtronic
Faizel Osman (Coventry, UK) chaired a session on "Cryoablation and PFA: Competing or Complementary in AF Management," exploring the role of these technologies in atrial fibrillation treatment. Neil Srinivasan (Basildon, UK) discussed the continued relevance of cryoablation, highlighting its efficiency, strong evidence base and safety profile. He outlined its benefits in high-volume centres, particularly in the UK, where it enables streamlined workflows and day-case procedures. Verena Tscholl (Berlin, DE) presented on pulse field ablation (PFA), describing its precision, shorter procedural times and reduced risk of collateral damage, particularly in high-risk patients. She provided insights into the PulseSelect system, its effectiveness in pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) and its potential for broader applications such as posterior wall ablation.
Ioanna Koniari (Liverpool, UK) explored the synergy between cryoablation and PFA, advocating for an individualised approach to patient selection. She noted that cryo remains a cornerstone for first-line treatment, particularly in paroxysmal AF, while PFA offers advantages for complex anatomies and high-risk cases. The panel discussed practical considerations, including workflow efficiency, sedation requirements and integration with existing electrophysiology mapping systems. The session concluded with an emphasis on balancing safety, efficacy and efficiency to optimise outcomes in AF management.
